Who you are buying from
Summit Flint operates this store at summitflint.com and sells hearth tools, cast iron, hearth textiles, lighting and home goods at retail to consumers in the United States.
Questions of any kind go to hello@summitflint.com, or by telephone during the hours published on the contact page — Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm MT. Every message answered within one business day.
Orders
Placing an order is an offer to buy. The contract is formed when we email you to confirm the order has been dispatched.
We may decline an order — if an item is out of stock, if we cannot verify the billing details, or if the order fails fraud screening. If we decline one, nothing is charged, and any authorisation is released.
We try to keep stock levels accurate. Several pieces are made in small runs and a couple are one-offs at any moment; if something sells out between your order and our picking it, we will tell you the same day and refund that line in full.
Prices and payment
All prices are shown and charged in USD. All prices are shown and charged in US Dollars (USD).
The price on a product page is the price of the product. Shipping and any sales tax are added at checkout and shown in full before you pay.
Prices can change, but never for an order already placed. The price you saw at checkout is the price you pay.
Payment is taken when the order is accepted. A pending authorisation may appear on your statement before that; it is released if we decline the order.
Your card statement will show SUMMIT FLINT.
One-time purchases only
Everything on this store is a one-time purchase. There is no subscription, no auto-renewal, no membership, no free trial and no stored payment method that can be charged again.
Replacement parts — broom heads, wicks, chimneys, striker strips, foot pads, fill — are bought when you need them. We do not offer them on a standing order, and nothing you buy here enrols you in anything.
If you ever see a second charge from us that you did not place, it is a mistake, and we will refund it the day you tell us about it.
Promotions
Where we run a promotion, the terms are stated on the page carrying it: what the discount is, what it applies to, and the date it ends.
One promotion code per order, and codes cannot be combined with each other. Codes have no cash value, cannot be exchanged for cash, and cannot be applied to an order that has already been placed.
A promotion price is the price for the purposes of a refund — a returned item is refunded at what you actually paid for it, not at the list price. A promotion that takes an order under $150 takes it under the free-shipping threshold too, because the threshold is measured on what you pay.
We do not run automatically-renewing offers.
Service life figures are estimates, not a warranty
This is the most important paragraph on this page, because the whole store is organised around a number that is easy to misread.
Every product page publishes a service life — how long we expect that piece to last in ordinary household use — along with the part that wears out first and whether we stock the replacement. Those figures are considered estimates of household service life. They are a statement about the object and how it is made. They are not a warranty, not a guarantee, and not a promise to replace anything in year nineteen.
They assume ordinary domestic use in the way the product page describes, and the care in the making record. A poker used to lever a stuck grate, a rack left out in the weather, a sheepskin put through a washing machine or a lantern burned on the wrong fuel will not reach the figure, and none of those is a defect in the piece.
We publish the figures anyway, and we publish the wear point with them, because a number that only ever flatters the product is not information. Where we quote a figure for a set, we quote the shortest-lived part in it rather than the longest.
Nothing in this section limits any right you have under consumer law that cannot be limited.
The warranty
Separately from the service life figures, every piece is warranted for 12 months from delivery against manufacturing defect: a failed weld, a cracked casting, a seam that opens, a fitting that was wrong when it left us.
If one of those happens inside 12 months, email us with your order number and a photograph. We repair it, replace it, or refund it — our choice as to which, but we will tell you why. There is nothing for you to pay, including the shipping either way.
The warranty does not cover ordinary wear, the natural variation and finish changes described on the returns page, consumable parts that have simply been used up, accident or misuse, or a piece used outside what the product page says it is for.
Consumables are excluded by their nature. A wick is meant to burn away; a broom head is meant to be replaced. Those are stocked and inexpensive precisely so a worn part never becomes a reason to throw the piece out.
What these products are, and what they are not
These are household goods for a room with a fireplace in it. They are not safety equipment, none of them is rated to a fire standard, and none replaces a working fireplace screen, a smoke alarm or a chimney sweep.
Three specific things, because they are the ones people assume. The hearth fender is a low kerb that contains what falls out at hearth level; it is NOT a spark guard and does not stop anything that leaves the fire above hearth level. The wool hearth mat is NOT a fireproof mat and is not rated to any fire standard — it resists ignition better than a synthetic one and it will still scorch and burn. Wool blankets and throws are NOT fire blankets and must never be used to smother a fire.
The oil lantern burns lamp oil or paraffin only. We do not sell fuel. Never use gasoline, alcohol or anything else not intended for a flat-wick lamp.
The cast fire back needs a firebox at least 24 inches wide and is not for a closed stove or an insert, and it is not a repair for failing masonry. Fitting anything into a working fireplace is your responsibility, and if you are unsure, have the chimney and firebox looked at by someone qualified before you use it.
Every product page carries the full making record: materials, dimensions, weight, finish, origin, care and a plainly stated list of what the piece is not for. Read it before you buy, and keep it — it ships in the box on a card for that reason.
Returns
Returns are covered in full on the returns page, and the summary is: 60 days from delivery on anything unused, on a prepaid label we send you, with the two freight pieces collected instead of posted and opened consumables excluded.
Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under consumer law that cannot be limited.
Liability
Our liability for any order is limited to the amount you paid for it, except where the law does not allow that limit — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, and for fraud.
We are not liable for a delay caused by a carrier, a weather event or anything else outside our reasonable control, though we will always help you chase it.
We are not liable for loss or damage arising from a piece being used for something the product page says it is not for. The section above is written plainly for that reason.
Intellectual property
The name Summit Flint, the site design, the photography, the making records and the product copy are ours. Please do not copy them.
You are welcome to link to any page on this site.
Governing law and disputes
These terms, and any sale made under them, are governed by the law of the United States and of the state in which this business is established, and the courts of that state have jurisdiction over any dispute.
That does not take away the consumer protections of the state you live in. Any right your own state gives you that cannot be waived, you keep.
We do not require arbitration, we do not ask you to waive a jury trial, and we do not restrict claims to a class-action waiver. If something goes wrong we would rather fix it than argue about the forum.
Before it gets that far, email hello@summitflint.com. Almost everything is fixable the same day, and a chargeback takes weeks to do what an email does in an afternoon.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
The terms that apply to your order are the ones in force on the day you placed it.
