The service life mark

How long it lasts

25–40 yr

Blackened steel and solid brass, no moving parts. The finish softens with heat and handling — that is the finish working, not failing.

What wears first

Nothing that fails. The base gets scuffed where it is dragged.

Welded, not fastened. There is nothing to come apart.

Replacement part

None stocked, because there is no part to replace — this piece has no consumable and nothing on it is fastened.

A service life figure is our estimate of how long this piece lasts in ordinary household use. It is not a warranty and not a guarantee of replacement — the warranty is stated separately in the terms. How the figure is arrived at is explained on service life.

What it is

A welded steel box for kindling and fatwood, open-topped so you can grab a handful without looking. 14 inches square and 10 tall — enough for about a week of daily fires.

Welded rather than folded and riveted. Rivets are what start rattling on a box that gets dragged across stone twice a day.

What it is not for

  • Not for hot ash or embers. This is a dry-kindling box and it has no lid.
  • The base edges will scratch a soft floor if the box is dragged. Lift it.
