The service life mark
How long it lasts
Cast iron and forged steel. Nothing in this band has a consumable part. Kept dry and re-seasoned when it asks for it, these outlive the house they were bought for.
What wears first
The striker strip on the base, which is a consumable and is replaceable.
The striker strip peels off and a new adhesive strip presses on. Strips are stocked in packs of five.

What it is
A machined brass cylinder that holds about forty 11-inch fireplace matches upright, with a replaceable striker strip recessed into the base. Most match holders are sized for kitchen matches and leave long matches sticking out at an angle; this one is not.
The brass is unlacquered. It arrives bright, goes brown-gold over the first year, and can be brought back with any metal polish whenever you want it bright again. A lacquered finish would hold the shine and then flake, which is the failure mode we would rather not sell.
What it is not for
- Matches are not included and are not sold here.
- Brass conducts heat readily. Do not set it on the hearth stone next to a live fire.
- Not childproof. It has no lid and no lock.
