The service life mark
How long it lasts
Blackened steel and solid brass, no moving parts. The finish softens with heat and handling — that is the finish working, not failing.
What wears first
The wick, then the glass chimney. Both are consumables and both are stocked.
Wicks and chimneys are stocked and swap out by hand in under a minute; the burner unscrews for cleaning.

What it is
A brass lantern with a 7/8 inch flat wick and a clear glass chimney. It burns lamp oil or paraffin, throws a genuinely warm light, and works when the power is out, which is a real consideration in a house heated by a fire.
Unlacquered brass, so it will patinate. The chimney and the wick are the parts that go: a wick lasts a winter of regular use and a chimney lasts until you knock it against something. Both are stocked, both are inexpensive, and neither should ever be the reason the lantern gets thrown away.
What it is not for
- Lamp oil is NOT included and is not sold here. Never use gasoline, alcohol or any fuel not intended for a flat-wick lamp.
- Not for unattended use, not for use around children or animals, and not to be left burning overnight.
- The chimney and the burner get extremely hot. Let it cool fully before moving it.
- Not an outdoor lantern in wind. It is a storm lantern in name and a draught will still put it out.
