The service life mark
How long it lasts
Wool, sheepskin and bridle leather. Natural fibres with a real wear point, all of them repairable, most of them better at year ten than year one.
What wears first
The bound edge nearest the fire, which scorches and frays first.
The binding can be re-stitched by any cobbler or upholsterer; we will do it for the cost of postage in the first ten years.
Replacement part
None stocked, because there is no part to replace — this piece has no consumable and nothing on it is fastened.
A service life figure is our estimate of how long this piece lasts in ordinary household use. It is not a warranty and not a guarantee of replacement — the warranty is stated separately in the terms. How the figure is arrived at is explained on service life.
What it is
Pressed undyed wool felt, 12 mm thick, bound at the edge in bridle leather. It goes in front of the hearth where the floor takes the ash, the sparks that land short and the boots.
Wool felt because it is dense enough to stop an ember that lands on it from reaching the floor before it dies, and because it takes a scorch mark rather than melting. That is a real difference from a synthetic mat and it is the reason for the price.
It will scorch. A mat in front of a working fire that has no marks on it after five years is a mat in front of a fire nobody uses.
What it is not for
- NOT a fireproof mat and not rated to any fire standard. It is a wool floor covering that resists ignition better than a synthetic one; it will still scorch, char and eventually burn.
- Not for use under a wood stove where a listed floor protector is required by code. Check your local code.
- Not machine washable at any temperature.
