The service life mark
How long it lasts
Cast iron and forged steel. Nothing in this band has a consumable part. Kept dry and re-seasoned when it asks for it, these outlive the house they were bought for.
What wears first
The felt on the underside, which compresses and can be re-felted.
Self-adhesive replacement felt sheets are stocked.
Replacement part
Stocked. Email support@summitflint.com with the stamp mark HS-01 and we will send you the part.
A service life figure is our estimate of how long this piece lasts in ordinary household use. It is not a warranty and not a guarantee of replacement — the warranty is stated separately in the terms. How the figure is arrived at is explained on service life.
What it is
A slab of riven Welsh slate, 12 mm thick, honed flat on the face and left with its natural split edge. Riven means it was split along its own cleavage plane rather than sawn, which is why the face has a fine texture and no two are identical.
It goes on the hearth or on a table under a kettle, a pot or a lantern. Slate is thermally stable well past anything a domestic hearth produces and it is heavy enough to stay where you put it.
The underside is fully felted, edge to edge, so it will not grind a table finish.
What it is not for
- Not a cutting board. A knife will score it and it will dull the knife.
- Slate is brittle at the edge. It will chip if it is dropped on a hard floor or knocked against stone.
- Not for a live-ember contact surface — this sits beside a fire, not inside one.
