The service life mark
How long it lasts
Cast iron and forged steel. Nothing in this band has a consumable part. Kept dry and re-seasoned when it asks for it, these outlive the house they were bought for.
What wears first
Nothing. A fire back is one casting and its whole job is to be the thing that takes the heat.
None needed. Surface rust wipes back with a wire brush.
Replacement part
None stocked, because there is no part to replace — this piece has no consumable and nothing on it is fastened.

What it is
A plain cast-iron fire back that stands against the rear wall of a firebox. It takes the heat that would otherwise go into the masonry and radiates it back into the room, and it stops the brick behind the fire from spalling over the years.
Plain field, no relief. Most fire backs are cast with a coat of arms on them; this one is a flat panel with a simple arched top, because a plain one is what most rooms actually want and the relief casting is where the cost goes.
It is 68 pounds. It ships freight on a pallet and two people should move it.
What it is not for
- Must not be used in a firebox smaller than 24 inches wide — it needs clearance at both sides for air.
- Not for a closed wood stove or an insert.
- Not a structural repair for damaged masonry. If brick is already failing, have the firebox looked at first.
