The service life mark
How long it lasts
Cast iron and forged steel. Nothing in this band has a consumable part. Kept dry and re-seasoned when it asks for it, these outlive the house they were bought for.
What wears first
Nothing. This is a single casting with no parts.
There is nothing to repair. Re-season it if the finish goes grey.
Replacement part
None stocked, because there is no part to replace — this piece has no consumable and nothing on it is fastened.
A service life figure is our estimate of how long this piece lasts in ordinary household use. It is not a warranty and not a guarantee of replacement — the warranty is stated separately in the terms. How the figure is arrived at is explained on service life.
What it is
A three-footed cast-iron trivet, seasoned with flaxseed oil. Three feet rather than four because three always sit flat on an uneven hearth stone and four never do.
It stands a kettle or a pot an inch and a half off the surface, which is the gap that keeps a hearth stone from cracking and a table from scorching.
What it is not for
- Will mark a waxed, oiled or soft-wood surface — the feet are bare iron and it is heavy.
- Not a hot pad for a hand-held pan; it stays hot for a long time after the pan comes off.

Hearth Kettle
2 litre, enamelled interior, hanging bail
Wears first — Nothing that fails. The exterior enamel can chip if it is dropped on stone.

Hearth Pot
5.5 quart enamelled cast iron, lidded
Wears first — Nothing that fails. The lid knob is the only fastened part.

Cast Fire Back
Freestanding, 20 × 16 inches, plain field
Wears first — Nothing. A fire back is one casting and its whole job is to be the thing that takes the heat.
