The service life mark

How long it lasts

Lifetime

Cast iron and forged steel. Nothing in this band has a consumable part. Kept dry and re-seasoned when it asks for it, these outlive the house they were bought for.

What wears first

Nothing that fails. The exterior enamel can chip if it is dropped on stone.

Cast in one piece with a riveted bail. A chip in the exterior enamel is cosmetic; a chipped interior means retiring it from water use.

Replacement part

None stocked, because there is no part to replace — this piece has no consumable and nothing on it is fastened.

A service life figure is our estimate of how long this piece lasts in ordinary household use. It is not a warranty and not a guarantee of replacement — the warranty is stated separately in the terms. How the figure is arrived at is explained on service life.

What it is

A 2-litre cast-iron kettle, enamelled inside and out, on a riveted steel bail. Sat on a hearth trivet beside a fire it gives off steam all evening, which is the entire point of a hearth kettle in a house with a wood fire and dry winter air.

The interior enamel means it will not take on the taste or the smell of what sat in it and it does not need seasoning. It is heavy — 6 pounds empty — and that is the trade for a piece with no moving parts and no service interval.

What it is not for

  • Not for direct flame or for sitting in the embers. Use it on a trivet at the edge of the hearth.
  • Not induction-rated as a stovetop kettle; the base is not machined flat.
  • The bail and body get hot. Use a cloth.
