The service life mark
How long it lasts
Wool, sheepskin and bridle leather. Natural fibres with a real wear point, all of them repairable, most of them better at year ten than year one.
What wears first
The fill, which compacts. Expect it to lose about a third of its loft by year ten.
The shell has a hidden zip along one edge and replacement wool fill is stocked by the pound.

What it is
A 20-inch square cushion for sitting on the floor by the fire, in the same pressed wool felt as the hearth mat with a bridle-leather carry strap on one edge.
Filled with carded wool rather than foam. Wool compacts — this one will be noticeably flatter at year ten than at year one — but it can be topped up through the zip, and foam of this thickness crumbles by year six and cannot be.
What it is not for
- Not a fire-resistant seat and not for placing on the hearth stone.
- Not washable, not dry-cleanable.
- Not a chair cushion — at 5 inches it is the wrong height for most seats.
