The service life mark
How long it lasts
Wool, sheepskin and bridle leather. Natural fibres with a real wear point, all of them repairable, most of them better at year ten than year one.
What wears first
The wool at the spine line, which flattens under repeated weight.
Flattened wool lifts with a wire pet brush and a day in cold dry air; it is recoverable for the first fifteen years or so.
Replacement part
None stocked, because there is no part to replace — this piece has no consumable and nothing on it is fastened.

What it is
A single full skin, vegetable-tanned with the wool on and left undyed. It goes in front of the fire or over the back of a chair. The wool is densest along the spine and softer at the flanks, which is why the outline is irregular and why the dimensions below are approximate rather than exact — a skin is the shape the animal was.
Vegetable-tanned rather than chrome-tanned. It takes longer, costs more, and produces a hide that stays supple as it ages instead of going stiff and papery at year eight.
Sizes vary by up to four inches in each direction. If you need an exact size, this is the wrong product.
What it is not for
- NOT for use directly in front of an unscreened fire. A sheepskin is a wool pile on a leather hide and it will take a spark. Keep it clear of the hearth stone.
- Not machine washable at any temperature.
- Not a bath mat and not for use anywhere that stays damp — the hide will rot.
- No two are identical in size, shape or shade.
