The service life mark
How long it lasts
Pieces with a genuine consumable — a horsehair head, a bellows hide, a lantern wick. The body lasts decades; the consumable is stocked, so you replace the part rather than the piece.
What wears first
The horsehair, at the leading edge. Expect visible wear at year six to eight of daily winter use.
The head unpins from the steel ferrule with a drift and a new head presses in. Replacement heads are stocked and cost a fraction of the broom.

What it is
Natural horsehair set in a steel ferrule on a pinned ash handle. Horsehair rather than synthetic because it does not melt when it meets a warm hearth stone, and because it moves fine ash instead of pushing it around.
This is the one piece in the catalog with a real consumable. The head is the part that goes, and it is designed to be replaced rather than to define the life of the broom — the handle and ferrule will outlast four or five heads. We would rather sell you a $16 head in year seven than a new broom.
What it is not for
- Not for live embers or hot ash — horsehair scorches. Let the hearth go cold.
- Not a general household broom; the head is soft and short-lived on rough floors.
