The service life mark
How long it lasts
Blackened steel and solid brass, no moving parts. The finish softens with heat and handling — that is the finish working, not failing.
What wears first
The horsehair on the broom head, at the leading edge where it meets the hearth.
The broom head unpins from its ferrule with a drift; replacement heads and ash handles are stocked for all four tools.

What it is
Four tools and the rack they hang on, in black-oxide mild steel with pinned ash handles. The poker is 32 inches, which is the length at which you can reach the back of a standard firebox without putting your forearm inside it; the shovel and tongs are cut to match so the set hangs level.
The handles are pinned rather than glued. That is a deliberate cost — a glued handle is faster to make and effectively permanent — but a pinned handle can be driven out and replaced in about ten minutes with a hammer and a nail punch, which is the difference between a tool set that lasts thirty years and one that becomes scrap the first time a handle splits.
The finish is black oxide, not paint. It is a conversion coating, chemically part of the steel surface, so it cannot chip or flake off into the hearth. It will lighten and mottle towards graphite over the first few winters, most quickly on the poker tip. That is the finish behaving normally and it is not a defect.
What it is not for
- Not for a wood stove with a closed firebox — the handles are unshielded and the tools are cut for an open hearth.
- The rack base is cast iron and will mark a soft or waxed floor. Set it on the hearth stone or on a mat.
- Not a fireplace screen and no substitute for one.
