The service life mark
How long it lasts
Pieces with a genuine consumable — a horsehair head, a bellows hide, a lantern wick. The body lasts decades; the consumable is stocked, so you replace the part rather than the piece.
What wears first
The broom head in the tool set — the shortest-lived part of the shortest-lived piece, at roughly year eight.
Every consumable in this set is stocked separately: broom heads, ash handles, fender foot pads, carrier handle sets.

A service life figure is our estimate of how long this piece lasts in ordinary household use. It is not a warranty and not a guarantee of replacement — the warranty is stated separately in the terms. How the figure is arrived at is explained on service life.
What it is
The four pieces that make an unequipped fireplace into a working one: the tool set with its rack, the fender that marks the edge of the hearth stone, the carrier for bringing wood in, and the trivet for whatever ends up sitting beside the fire.
The set states a service life of eight years, which is not the life of the steel — the fender and the tools are 25 to 40 year objects and the trivet is a lifetime one. Eight years is when the broom head needs replacing, and we quote the shortest-lived part rather than the longest because the other way round is how a number stops meaning anything.
What it is not for
- The fender is NOT a spark guard and no piece in this set replaces a fireplace screen.
- Sized for an open hearth. None of it suits a closed wood stove.
- Requires a hearth stone at least 12 inches deep for the fender.
